The faculty of medicine in Sudan international university represents a new concept with a new philosophy in medical education. It embraces local and regional needs and aspires to global standards.
It offers a five years program &grants degree of Bachelor of medicine & Surgery (M.B.B.S).
So, although we keep separate phases for the curriculum there is a good deal of integration, both 'horizontally' so that disciplines within medicine are learned together and 'vertically' in that clinical work and relevance are introduced from the beginning.
Our mission is to be nationally and internationally recognized leaders investing in education, research and service, making important contributions to Health.
Main Features of the Programme:
- The curriculum is concerned with providing the medical students with a sense of responsibility towards the patient and society which is lacking in medical education in many developing countries.
- The curriculum is based on community and public health, to reflect the medical problems of the country
- Clinical relevance is emphasized throughout the course. Early clinical experience is introduced to the students during their study of basic medical sciences.
- Joint teaching by different departments, especially in the basic medical sciences, is planned to ensure effective integration and holistic approach to teaching of medicine.
Overview of the Programme:
The College of Medicine at Sudan International University (SIU) runs a five-year MBBS programme, divided into 10 semesters, of approximately 20 weeks each. The curriculum is a hybrid between the traditional pre-clinical/clinical system and the highly integrated systems. So, although we keep separate phases for the curriculum (see below) there is a good deal of integration, both 'horizontally' so that disciplines within medicine are learned together and 'vertically' in that clinical work and relevance are introduced from the beginning.
On successful completion of the MBBS programme, the medical graduate will:
- Understand the scientific foundations of medicine, and will apply that understanding to the practice of medicine.
- Master the core clinical skills needed to evaluate and care for patients. This includes:
- Obtain relevant and adequate medical history, perform appropriate physical examination, use diagnostic tests appropriately and synthesize the information to formulate a differential diagnosis.
- Use his/her knowledge, skills, clinical judgment and the scientific method to formulate a plan of management
- Recognize and institute initial treatment for patients with life-threatening emergencies;
- Work collaboratively as a member of health care teams to offer the patient the best multi-disciplinary care.
- Understand the importance of disease prevention and acquire the ability to formulate strategies for promoting health and preventing illness.
- Develop the capacity for life-long learning including use of information technology and ability to critically evaluate the medical literature.
- Treat patients with compassion and respect, maintain integrity and high moral conduct and adhere to ethical principles.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and abilities.
- Know how to critically appraise the scientific and clinical evidence that underlies the best approaches to the treatment and care of individuals and populations and contribute to scientific and medical research.
- Listen to and communicate effectively with patients, patients' families, colleagues and others who contribute to health care delivery, in both written records and in oral communication.
The Course structure for MBBS in Medicine & Surgery is divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 (Semesters 1 – 4) – Scientific Foundations of Medicine
- Phase 2 (Semesters 5 -6) – Science and medical practice
- Phase 3 (Semesters 7 -10) – Clinical rotations
Brief description of the phases the curriculum:
Phase 1 (Semesters 1 – 4) – Scientific Foundations of Medicine:
This phase aims at understanding basic human structure and function in health and disease. It is not a traditional pre-clinical basic science course, as it covers clinical situations, involves both basic science and clinical teachers and also includes the learning of basic clinical skills, which includes principles of ethical practice and communication skills.
Phase 2 (Semesters 5 -6) – Science and medical practice:
In this phase teaching of clinical science is entwined with introduction of clinical medicine. The students will study horizontally integrated subjects of pathology and microbiology. In this phase the students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to communicate with patients, examine them, and interpret observations. During Phase 2, the student will continue to acquire knowledge in the basic and human sciences, whilst building upon the clinical and communication skills acquired in Phase 1.
Phase 3 (Semesters 7 -10) – Clinical rotations:
The final phase of the curriculum is dominated by clinical rotations but students will have opportunities to revisit the basic and human sciences underpinning medical practice, and opportunity to be involved in aspects of investigative medicine. The last part of this phase provides an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge and experience of medicine ready for their first steps in medical practice as a pre-registration house officer. Students will spend some time in a shadow house officer attachment, and there will be an opportunity to work on a training ward with other health care professionals. I this phase, learning is supplemented by other learning opportunities like seminars, workshops and small group sessions which build on previous learning and help to integrate scientific and clinical knowledge. Clinico-Pathological Conferences (CPCs) help students in understanding the key concepts and knowledge that relate to each care pathway.
