Faculty of Medicine

INTRODUCTION

The faculty of medicine in Sudan International University represents a new concept with a new philosophy in medical education. It embraces local and regional needs and aspires to global standards.

The College of Medicine at Sudan International University (SIU) runs a five-year MBBS program, divided into 10 semesters, of approximately 20 weeks each. The curriculum is a hybrid between the traditional pre-clinical/clinical system and the highly integrated systems.

The faculty is located at Alazhari area and possess a new building of SIU university hospital

It offers a five- year program & grants degree of Bachelor of medicine & Surgery (M.B.B.S).

So, although we keep separate phases for the curriculum there is a good deal of integration, both 'horizontally' so that disciplines within medicine are learned together and 'vertically' in that clinical work and relevance are introduced from the beginning.

The curriculum utilizes a variety of instructional methods; including lectures, tutorial classes, practical training in the lab & skills lab, small group teaching, problem based learning and clinical in-patient and out-patient rounds, and computer assisted learning in many courses.

Our libraries satisfy the students’ needs, in the book library with enough seating space in an air conditioned environment and in the electronic library that is connected to the vast worldwide database through high-speed internet access.

Our laboratories are up-to-date and there are the latest standards in technical equipment in physics, chemistry, biochemistry and physiology to satisfy the needs of the structured teaching programs and research.

Our anatomy dissection room and the skills laboratory are up to the latest standards as well, we use natural and plasticized bodies and simulation methods in clinical skills teaching.

The faculty participates in all extracurricular activities inside & outside the university (cultural & social activities).

The scientific societies in the faculty with their supervision arrange their activities (health convoys).

The students stay two weeks in rural areas assessing the health problems in the different communities, discuss the suitable solutions & practice the components of the primary health care.

The faculty has special consideration for the student's volitional activities in sports, arts & music which are essential for building the character of the graduates and encourages and supervises such activities through the student’s affairs directorate.

The College of Medicine at Sudan International University (SIU) runs a five-year MBBS program, divided into 10 semesters, of approximately 20 weeks each. The curriculum is a hybrid between the traditional pre-clinical/clinical system and the highly integrated systems.

The program is divided into three phases:
  • Phase 1 (Semesters 1 – 3) – Scientific Foundations of Medicine & This phase aims at understanding basic human structure and function in health and disease.
  • Phase 2 (Semesters 4 -6) – Science and medical practice & in this phase teaching of clinical science is entwined with introduction of clinical medicine.
  • Phase 3 (Semesters 7 -10) – Clinical rotations, the final phase of the curriculum is dominated by clinical rotations, but students will have opportunities to revisit the basic and human sciences underpinning medical practice, and opportunity to be involved in aspects of investigative medicine.
